Vancouver carfree festival summer 2007 E-mail

The Drive was closed off and people took full advantage of it. The various cafes or restaurants that were allowed to sell alcohol moved tables onto the street like the terraces they have in Montreal. Some restaurants opened their windows or just took their stereos outside and so every half a block one would hear different types of music in the air.

The many booths along the street were colorfully filled with crafts, clothing, food, and other assorted things. I remember walking down the street and being able to see about 3 blocks down the hill. What a view to see so many people smiling and enjoying themselves with an visible pleasure of being free to play and roam without normal city restrictions.

Each year the event happens, I speak to people and we all agree that it should happen every few weeks instead of only twice a year. The liberation of being able to walk without cars, drink in terraces on the street, and just be carfree for a few days is too rare in the city.
